10:41 pm - even more badger madness - Well as it turns out there's four gigs in the next month, ooh boy, so I got three more tasty ideas to work into full posters:

These last two are for the same gig because I only found out about gig four halfway through, but more posters is never a bad thing.
-'Name me an animal, Hobson' 'I dunno... a badger?' - 'Badger it is.'

12:18 am - The swelling won't go down More gig poster goodness!

These guys have another gig in Dundee and one in Glasgow over the next five weeks, both of which are gonna be postered by yours truly
*dances the dance of those who draw badgers*

10:58 am - Threadless Salamander more threadless action!
- You heard it here first! More action over at threadless, this time the salamander is taking a stint under the scary eye of bizarre scrutiny that is Threadless!

so if you've got a couple of spare minutes, head on over and give it a vote - if enough of you like it you too might be able to wear it in t-shirt form! How amazin is that?

04:27 pm - in other news what we seem to have here is a surplus of hippo:

|
01:48 pm - this might sting initially I realised the other day that free time is for losers, and to that end I have started on yet another comic idea, complete with Compulsory Young Kid:

Don't worry, knowing me this is probably not gonna involve a great deal of dolls and prams...

11:59 am - New project (?) - Well it's been three weeks since I last posted anything, and that obviously just isn't good enough!
Since last time I've been doing some character design for a project, it's early days still but here's some initial sketches. The dinosaur and the second sheet are just pencils so they're a bit rough:

and there's this larger-scale one as well:

his name is Winfield, I can't tell you any more or they'll track me down like wolves chasing a gambling debt...

08:55 pm - Festival - Yeah that's me back from the Wickerman, an insanely drunken time was had by all, and now that the DT's have gone I was able to scribble this down for you:

10:13 am - the trouble with salamanders - I managed to get the salamander done as a lino cut last week as well, and I got some work-in-progress shots as well, which is something I never usually remember to do:

This is just started - I usually do a quick outline first to put a limit on where I'm cutting. The best place to cut lino is in direct sunlight, you wouldn't believe how much easier it is to cut warm lino, but if you don't pay the bills the next best thing is five minutes in the oven. And always always always cut away from you, those bastards are sharp!

Filled in a bit more detail here, then when I've got all the outlines down I can fill out the textures a bit more:

and an outside, because I'm crazy like that. There's ten blades for my lino cutter, but I've only ever used the two smallest, mainly because I don't see the point in having big blank empty spaces:

Then I cut the lino down to the outline - usually I'd leave the print as a square but I think it looks better like this - and took this photo of all the stuffs I use - the spoon and dictionary are for pressing the lino onto the paper to get a good print:

Then I cleaned up the desk - because lino scrapings in your paint is never a good plan - and printed it up. I prefer using oil paint for better coverage even though it takes three or four days to dry properly, because then you get a final result like this:

Ta da! Appearing soon on a t-shirt near you! And as if that wasn't enough I played around with some colour as well:

11:18 am - And we have a winner! Well this was meant to be up earlier, but the weekend had a bit more alcohol and other dramas in it, including me managing to kill my only dip pen nib:

But after running down the shop and actually finding a nib that seems to work better than the last one, everything was vaguely back on track.
So anyways, the competition was a brilliant excuse for giraffe to tear shit up, and after much deliberation by means of dartboard the winner is Stu:

how's about that for bulldozer-based fun? Most of the entries came through the myspace, which is no surprise (pfft!), but depending on how busy I am I might get round to doing some of the other entries, as, you know, I'm not one to turn down a good idea

01:31 pm - Giraffe should maybe think about a different career everybody's favourite bulldozer-wielding giraffe is back!

but what is he looking at? Is he still being terrorised by a certain rubber-faced primate or does something else have its eye on a giraffe-shaped prize? Best suggestion by, let's say... Friday, will be drawn in over the weekend and posted back here next monday. Sound like a deal? Great!

11:08 pm - something new? And here's Lily again:

she's managed to batter her way through enough pages to make up a submission, which means that this is the point where I start punching kittens for luck, or something like that. I even have a vague idea where it could all end up, but that would be telling.

03:35 pm - flies not fungus - In case you weren't wondering, here's where I work:

the shambles there is the script - to stretch the definition - of Lily and Chris that I mentioned in the last post. The first four pages are mostly in, but the rest is gonna have to take its chances with the tigers...
In other news, I didn't get too much inking done today:

|
June 11th, 2007
02:57 pm - no fuss, just flesh wounds Well that was an unproductive weekend yay! But in other news, the story of Lily and Chris flinches on:

HOW CAN YOU STAND THE LACK OF SUSPENSE!
To get the plot worked out for this twisted thing, I sketched out the storyline eight pages at a time, because that's how small I can divide an a4 sheet and still pretend it's legible. Then I cut it out and pinned it up so I could get a look at it all at once, problem is that of the twenty pages I thought the story was gonna take, so far I'm gonna have to change twenty-three and a half. It's still got the same start and end, but the middle has sprouted an extra four pages or so and some fangs...

08:21 pm - more salamander! So that's the inking half done

hopefully by Monday I'll have some more info on Lily and Chris for you, a finished salamander, and a swarm of angry locusts ready to pluck the flesh from your bones
no wait
I meant a lino cut. a lino cut that is eager for flesh.
|
04:55 pm - salamanders - Woke up this mornin thinking that in addition to the builders next door, the flat under me had started a band.
But it was a free gig instead *right outside my house* How amazin is that? So, amazingly, I left the house today, and while I was out I drew this:

I reckon it'd be pretty smart as a tattoo, or I might turn it into a lino cut and do some t-shirts - any ideas?

12:32 pm - more experimentings

electric rage never looked so appalling!

08:11 pm - colour - and now in colour:

|

12:56 am - not necessarily my fault - well this looks a hell of a lot better than it did as a lino cut back in April:

02:45 pm - busy day I love three day weekends!
- No Shetland, you are self-employed now, you don't get 'time off' any more.
How about if I do a shedload today?
- Well okay then. This would seem to be a space hopper gorilla trying to persuade the giraffe to come down the pub. Are you off yr tree on caffeine already?
Yes.
